Grade 8

Expressions, equations, and inequalities are embedded in more complex situations and include integer exponents and radicals in grade 8. Systems of equations are explored through context-based problems to make sense of strategies and solution procedures. Additionally, proportional reasoning is connected to linear equations through similar triangles and slope. Slope is viewed as a rate of change and is connected to the concepts of ratio and proportion.

As students progress through the middle grades, their understandings of expressions, equations, and inequalities provide the foundation to make sense of functions beginning in grade 8 and progressing into high school concepts. High school mathematics draws on understandings of generalizing patterns with increasingly complex situations. Applications at the high school level include the use of multivariable situations and build on prior knowledge from middle-grades topics involving expressions, equations, and inequalities to reason about complex situations and make sense of higher-level mathematics.
